Hope everyone had a Happy New Year and the Holidays were kind to you. Been busy with work and our new addition, Lexie Jane. 6 weeks old now, 4th and final in the kid lineup. The snow in these parts(Northern Michigan)is about up to the waist. Well spring can't be too far away..
Give me some direction to some Fat Morning Dews. Maybe one that does not get much attention, but gets you going none the less.

northstar, congratulations!
might i suggest another Dew from Europe '72? one of my very favourites:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd72-05-11.sbd.samaritano.9357.sbeok.shnf

i'm not sure about it being 'fat', but i love the ending of it especially, Jerry really comes out with some seriously soulful singing

in fact, i think i'll listen to the whole show, it has been awhile

At the Human Be-In in Golden Gate Park, with Tim Leary, Allen Ginsberg, etc etc all on hand:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd67-01-14.sbd.vernon.9108.sbeok.shnf

This gets marvelous reviews:

"Reviewer: redwinter - - August 21, 2008
...I have not listened to Morning Dew from 1-14-67 in more than seven months. Why? Because I don't want to spoil what I feel to be the closest thing any musician has ever come to perfection or, what I call, contact with the super (super powerful, super unknown, super beings, or supreme beings)... When I first heard Morning Dew, I nearly cried. I felt like I had gone back to some childhood memory. I could see roses unfolding, morning rain, joy, and I felt like I was alive. It brought into mind what Henry Miller said about music in Tropic Of Capricorn, "Music is interplanetary fire. It is the slate writing of the Gods."

"Reviewer: L. Rosley - - May 29, 2008
For Dew fans, this is a must-listen. Not only is it the very first of three decades of Dews, but it is a good version!... But there is more significance to this Morning Dew. It is the earliest instance of a sound that is recognizably Grateful Dead. What a contrast from even the previous month of December 1966. For the first time, Jerry finds his vocal style, not apparent in any of the '66 shows at Archive.org (I've listened to them all.) Also for the first time, Jerry finds a guitar style and sound that is recognizable as Grateful Dead..."

This one's pretty fine:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1972-05-23.sbd.cribbs.32863.sbeok.flac16

"Reviewer: Chris U. - - May 23, 2008 Subject: Dark Star->Dew Definitive Version
...This the Dark Star->Morning Dew against which all others should be compared (and inevitably fail)... The segue from the Dark Star into the Dew is as gentle and perfect as a tree frog's egg sliding from a leaf into the stream below, leaving only a jelly crater and ten thousand gently expanding ripples. This Dew is superior to the Europe '72 version in every aspect. Jerry's guitar accents between the verses are by themselves enough to justify him as one of the greatest lead singer/guitarists in rock history. And then there's the solo. Listen to the tone of Phil's bass!"

I tell my youngest daughter that snow looks so good on tv until it turns to slush. That's why I left NJ 15 years ago for South Florida. I've got to have year round access to the golf course. Anyway, I'll skip the typical answers and go to a lesser known show that is both very good and has a tremendous Dew.

Hey NS--congrats on the addition (Not my place to say, but I always think that a few more well-informed sorts that live a good life and take care of one another and the planet as best they can, blah, blah, blah, are better than mindlessly following some ZPG approach in reproduction if you follow that logic; raise em all up as best you can in that spirit [or your own--again, not my place to advise] and it'll be a beautiful experience).

Sorry, somehow MD isn't one of my early era tunes that I keep a listing of rating wise for some reason...

One of my favorites is Greek 1981: The Jam in the middle of the song is powerfeul and the ending jam is almost perfect. The only flaw is that Jerry comes in a half beat or so early with his final vocal, but the jam is exquisite, nice and quiet to begin with, and it builds from there.
